Ishmael Amin

Data Scientist
Northwestern University MSDS candidate, expected graduation 2019

Passion makes all the difference. Some of my friends have considered me a great drummer. I was not born knowing everything that there was to know about music. I had a passion to become great and I knew that it would take a lot of practice. Of course, greatness is a relative thing, and I am sure that my former classmates would remind me to remain humble. Practice, practice, practice was an ever present theme that exemplified my passion. Practice leads to improvement and an ability to learn without limits.

There have been times when I lost my passion as a working professional; when programming just became a job. However, I rediscovered my passion for data science by taking a sabbatical from the humdrum work cycle that many people find themselves.  I started my own business, Moby Interactive Media that focused on my artistic talents. I began to invest my time and knowledge in practicing photography, videography, web development, programming, and performing music. I learned a lot about myself. When I follow my passion, and apply myself, I can accomplish great things.

Throughout my career, as a data scientist and IT professional, I have applied the work ethos of studying and practicing to learn new skills, to keep current, to be relevant, and to flourish within my profession. Data science is an interdisciplinary field that allows me to draw upon my diverse knowledge gained by studying and practicing the disciplines of data analytics, statistical analysis, software engineering, web development, database administration, and network administration. Data science appeals to my sense of purpose and passion to provide services of value.

Northwestern University, Master’s in Data Science Online Candidate

MSDS Candidate - Graduate Student

• Master’s thesis project analyzes sentiment misclassification as part of predicting stock price fluctuation by applying Naïve Bayes algorithm, LSTM, MLP, artificial intelligence deep learning, machine learning, sentiment analysis, and NLP news analytics. Develop Python corpus application that scrapes unstructured news articles.

• Extract and store lexical, sentiment, and machine learning features into JSON, and SQLite database. Build models using Python 3.6, Keras, TensorFlow, TextBlob, NLTK, spaCy, Scikit-Learn (sklearn) and Gensim.

• Create models and processes to collect, distill and interpret data. Data used to predict benign and malignant based on University of California Irvine, Breast Cancer Wisconsin (Diagnostic) structured dataset. Apply Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, Logistic Regression, and Neural Network to discover best predictive models using R.

• Predict price of real estate in Ames Iowa based on physical characteristics of the homes, socio-economics, and geographic data. Perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) on structured dataset, and utilize Multivariate Ordinary Least Squares Regression Analysis, indicator variables, and coded in SAS Studio, RStudio, and Python: cleaning, transforming, and aggregating data.

• Design aesthetically pleasing data visualizations using GGPlot, Tableau, and Matplotlib. Predict optimal marketing campaign strategy to maximize profit for non-profit organization: applied Machine Learning such as SVM, Random Forest Classifiers using R.

• Demonstrate predictive accuracy of over 5 logistic regression models scoring within 3% of actual average wine cases sold using RMSE to compare model performance.

• Explore predictability of abalone age from physical measurements as opposed to the time consuming process of counting growth rings. Perform an exploratory data analysis (EDA) and calculated statistical inferences using multivariate regression, and R.

• On career sabbatical to complete master's thesis. Part-time graduate school experience overlaps with consulting positions held at US Bank (Kforce) and the City of New Orleans (Strategic Staffing Solutions).

• Recommended technologies that were adopted into winning Rockefeller Foundation National Disaster Resilience Competition grant of $141.3 million to the City of New Orleans

• Collaborated with city leaders in developing the strategic vision of city resilience that incorporates data-driven, evidence-based decision-making whose data was gathered from smarter city, Internet of Things (IoT), and Predictive Analytics methodologies.

• Developed City of New Orleans Mayor’s dashboard using Tableau software. Dashboard presented 911 and 311 data so that city leadership could quickly grasp trends in call response times within various NOPD districts, and city departments. Tableau dashboard life cycle development required data wrangling and data cleansing using the Python Pandas library. Tableau reports utilized data supplied by Socrata data warehouse.

• Optimized performance of existing R script by integrating algorithm into Microsoft Azure Machine Learning. Code written by third-party that utilized ESRI ArcGIS Shapefiles to reduce the call response times of emergency medical services vehicles.

• Facilitated the transformation of the city into an organization that differentiates and competes on evidenced based predictive analytics.

• Experimented with Hadoop to build enterprise data warehouse prototypes using MS Azure that promoted city resilience for New Orleans.
